Writing Songs in Spanish

People oftentimes as me how do I go about writing my songs in Spanish. Well, for me it really is no different than writing songs in English. The biggest difficulties with my Spanish verses is my limited vocabulary and my pronunciation. I'm not a native speaker, so pronunciation is not secondary. I'm learning more and more Spanish everyday and so with time preparing songs has become easier but are from simple.

Melodies tend to come to me first. It is only then that I start putting words together. For me, lyrics have to sound right and not just be impressive content wise. People should hear your flow and, even if they have no clue what you're saying, they can vibe to it because your voice matches the beat so lovely that they don't have to know what you're saying to feel it, feel me?

That's how I play it.

How to Keep Legal Fees to A Minimum

Many people in business, and not in business, recognize how important it is to have a lawyer on deck. Well, let me be more specific - a good lawyer on deck. And trust, a strong lawyer (or lawyers) on the team is pretty much vital to a business' success. But budding entrepreneurs oftentimes find themselves in positions where they don't have much resources (i.e., money) to allocate to legal fees. What do you do then? Well, let me give you 3 brief suggestions.

1. Do your own legal research. So what you didn't go to law school and didn't pass the bar exam. You still can learn a lot about the law by taking a moment to do your own research. Hit the web and see what you can find. There is a lot of misinformation out there so be weary, but I'm pretty sure you'll learn at least a little if you search the legal topic of your concern. By the time you're done with your research, you'll have a better understanding of the issues and therefore will be able to have smarter conversations with your attorney. And you should know that having smarter conversations will likely save the attorney's time and thus your dollars.

T-Tip: Please note that each country's (and each state in each country's) laws may be drastically different. Make sure when you are doing your research you search for the legal issues within the country and state that concerns you.

2. Do as much work as you can first. If you need an attorney to draft, for example, an LLC Operating Agreement, take a moment and jot down ideas for how some of the various provisions should work. If you don't know what types of provisions would go into the agreement, ask your attorney. The agreement should address how money is split, how members will be removed and added, how members vote, etc. Ask yourself how you would like those provisions to work. I don't mean you should actually draft provisions. Just jot down a few lines, such as "profits will be split evenly" or "members who contribute more money to the company get more voting power."

3. Lead the negotiation yourself (if you can). When you hire an attorney to represent you in, let's say, buying a business, you don't have to rely on the attorney for all of the negotiations. Now I would say if you could then generally you should, as sharp attorneys are used to negotiating and know how to word phrases to encourage the other side to see things your way. However, not every aspect of an agreement needs to be negotiated by your attorney. Perhaps you don't want to get into the nuances of a "reasonable" vs. "best efforts" standard of care language, but you could negotiate the selling price yourself. Sometimes I actually encourage my clients to speak directly to the other side because it can make the negotiations run smoother. I'm secure enough to admit that sometimes attorneys can get in the way.

4. Make sure you really want "it." Don't go through the process of finding an attorney, paying him/her a retainer, having him/her do work for you and then at the last minute, even after you got everything you wanted, decide not to move forward with the transaction. You didn't really waste the attorney's time because he/she got paid for his/her services, but you definitely wasted your money by beginning a process that you weren't too sure about. Think it through thoroughly and make sure this is what you want before you find yourself

There are many other ways to consider for keeping legal fees to a minimum, but these are just a few to get you started.

About a year or so ago I met an incredible singer/songwriter/musician named Nick at Ish Pro Studios. Ever since I heard his voice I knew one day we would make a great collab. And today is that day. I already laid all verses down for the track last week. The pic above is me in the studio the night I laid them down. As you can see we set the mood right. I was in the zone to say the least.

Nick has such a soulful voice. Trust me, you'll never be able to guess what he looks like off of his voice. I love that aspect about him. We'll probably capture some video of the recording session. You already know I'll be sharing that with you. Really looking forward to the recording session today. I believe we are going to create something incredible.

Spending Money on Music

As an independent artist, it's frequently difficult to determine where you should spend your money to expand people's awareness of your music. Should it be on recording a new song that might resonate with many? A reputable PR firm that wants thousands a month? A publicist that claims to be connected? A street team to pass out flyers with your info on it? Shit, who knows? Indie artist tend to have limited resources so every penny spent really counts. Many can't just try out some new marketing strategy for a couple grand, because that could mean stopping them from being able to record songs for some time as there just isn't enough money to handle both.

I usually let my spirit guide to me let me know what's the right move. I'm far from one of those artists that would do anything for fame so dropping thousands for a dumb scheme to make me "big" just wouldn't happen. I prefer the real movement, where you gain real Facebook likes, real Twitter followers and real fans coming to your shows. If that's going to take a lot of time then hey let it.

I'm loving the authenticity and speed of my movement right now. In 2012 I'm sure I'll continue to make some strong headway; not because I have some clever plan, but because I'm going to continue to share my art - period. I hope all you other New Breed artists continue to do the same.

That title may seem off, but it's right on key. Too many times us artists prepare songs for "the masses," whatever the fuck that means. We're trying to "blow" of a "hit" record so we create songs with certain topics and beat patterns that aren't even authentic to us in order to "make it." It's funny. And so many will try that and still not "make it" - or if they do they will be caged into some bullshit.

Your man T doesn't follow that program. I write from an important place that is unique to me so that I can feel it. I write for me so that I can write for you with all honesty, both in topic and sound choice.

How to Properly Structure a Business Investment

Ok so you have this incredible business idea that you really think could work. Congrats - for real! Now all you need is some money to make it happen, right? You're asking yourself, "If I can hardly pay my bills how the hell do I expect to have money to start a business?" Fair question. But having little disposable income should not stop you from chasing your dreams and seeing that idea turn into reality.

So what do you do? You could go to a bank, but expect to get dissed. After banks have crashed, they aren't taking the high risks they were taking years ago with lending money. If you don't have hard assets to use at collateral, they will be quick to give you the middle finger. Trust me. You could try the Small Business Administration for a loan or grant, or seek out state or private organizations for the same, and I strongly encourage you to do so, but of course those come with their limitations, tough paper work, and other difficulties as well. One method that I strongly encourage is to seek out venture capitalists or angel investors to help finance your business. These are people with some money on their hands, looking for something to do with it other than letting it sit in a low-interest bearing account. Even in this down economy, people with a few extra dollars are still looking for business opportunities.

Since I usually get a lot of questions when it comes to presenting business plans to investors, I'll focus this entry on how to structure investments with investors in a way that works for both the business and investors.

Before you can even consider approaching any investor, you need to make sure that you have properly calculated how much you need to get the business started and sustaining. It's that second part that people tend to forget about, but we'll get to that in a minute. You also need to prepare financial statements to help determine the value of the business and what investors should expect to make should they invest in your company. What concepts to be addressed in a full fledged business plan should probably also be discussed at some point, but let's put that to the side for now and focus on numbers.

Calculating Start-Up Costs

Below is a list of items that you should consider in determining your start-up costs. Please note that businesses vary tremendously, so some items listed may be irrelevant (or less detailed than they should be) depending on the type of business you are seeking to fund.

Building and Design: costs of constructing and designing how your business will look on the interior and exterior. This includes construction, signage, furniture, paint and all aspects of establishing your business' decor. Don't forget the small spaces, like bathrooms and minor hallways. All areas contributing to your business' look are important.
Equipment and Supplies: all equipment and items needed to allow your operation to function effectively and efficiently. For example, such equipment for a restaurant may include a grill, deep fryers, hood ventilation system, griddles, refrigerators, cash registers, spatulas, silverware, napkins, cups, straws, pots, employee uniforms, cleaning supplies, sound system and a boat load of other items. Think of every item--no matter how small--that you need to operate your business.
Marketing: all costs associated with getting the word out about how great your new business to come is. These costs include any fliers, posters, events, giveaways, business cards, ads, brochures, fees owed to any marketing/branding company you work with, and any other expenses associated with spreading the awareness of your business.
Governmental Requirements: all costs required for your business to operate legally. People tend to forget this cost, but many times you can't just simply open up a business anywhere you want without dealing with certain approvals required by the state and/or federal government or other policing organization; and these approvals are hardly ever free! So call your local government and figure out what licenses, inspections and other requirements you need to open your business. If your business will be playing music for customers' enjoyment, don't be surprised if you eventually get a letter from BMI or ASCAP asking for an annual fee for playing the music of artists who are registered with them.

Attorney Fees: money needed to pay for legal counsel. It's always a good idea to sit down with an attorney before opening your business. An attorney can help you with structuring your company (i.e., Sole Proprietorship vs. LLC vs. LLP vs. LP vs. Corporation), negotiating against and drafting agreements for investors or potential landlords, and making sure you have all the tools to legally operate your business.

Insurance: costs associated with establishing an insurance plan for your business. Keep in mind, some landlords require you to have insurance (around $1-$2 million in my experience in small business) so don't think you can always skip out on this expense just because you are ok with taking the risk of having no insurance.

Now onto keeping the business sustainable as part of the start up costs--the part that many rookie entrepreneurs frequently forget about. It's called "working capital." "Working capital" is often defined as current assets minus current liabilities, but try to just think of it as the amount of money that a business uses in its day-to-day operations. You need this is. Wait, let me say (well, write) that again - YOU NEED THIS! You can't open your doors and bank on your first few customers to cover your expenses. Most businesses need a substantial period of time to actually break even, let alone make a profit. Where are you going to get the money from to buy more inventory if no one comes to your business in the first month? Your money to pay for your employees? Your savings? No - those are not smart options. Therefore, when you are raising money for your business, you need to calculate anywhere from about 3 months to 1 year of working capital, depending on how much time your research tells you that your business will need to break even. Therefore before all the working capital is wiped out, the business has begun to pay for itself or, even better, turn a profit.

Ok that's it for now. In "How to Properly Structure a Business Investment - Part 2" I will discuss preparing financial statements and valuating your new business. It is only after you get a sense of your start up costs and financial/valuation figures that you can then properly create an investment structure for investors.

I swear, sometimes shit hits hard. We go real hard at doing what we do - us committed artists that is - and the fight of spreading your music can get exhausting. Doubt loves to creep in.

The love for the art form alone can keep you going, especially if you do music because you really love creating music (and not cause you love attention). But I tell you, not much can compare to a fan expressing to you how much your music has touched him or her. Man, just yesterday I hit my man's party at 4Sixty6 and a cat I went to high school with came up to me to let me know just how much he loves my album "T." What hit me most was when he said, "Yo man, I don't just hear the music. I listen to the words, man. I feel what you on!" What more could I ask for to keep doing what I do. His words charged me enough for a whole album!

We give ourselves to others, through our art or otherwise. Spending endless hours coming as close to perfection as we can. Then it's that same very thing that others use to give us something back. In summation, you give energy and you get it right back. I tell you right now I'm high as hell off the energy I got yesterday and I think it's going to make me an even better artist. Nah scratch that, I KNOW it will.

Are We Brainwashed?

I was coolin' at my brother's place when I discovered a book entitled "Brainwashed" by Tom Burrell. The book explores the propaganda which started centuries ago aimed at making Blacks feel inferior. I'm on page 95 and can't put the book down. What I really about the book is the fact that it's current. It discusses race issues post Barack, so it feels more applicable than other books that touch upon the touchy issue of race before the U.S. had a president that wasn't a white male. I definitely suggest picking this one up and thinking about whether you agree with Burrell that there has been an effective, consistent marketing scheme to make a certain group feel ugly, intelligent and hostile.

Last Night

Last night, I hit Ish Production Studios to record a new song I'm working on. We got the hook finalized and second verse done as well. I think we're good to go. I'm just soaking in the track a bit to see if there are any modifications I want to make before we call it a wrap. Like always, it was refreshing to put some time aside to create music.

I feel like the vision is there. The sound is there. The determination is there. I just have to continue to place myself in positions where more and more people can learn about what I'm doing. Think I'm going to play NY a little more close than I normally do. Looking forward to discovering a few more venues to meet more artists, meet more fans and just meet more good people that I can learn from and share with.

Occupying OUR Street

There has been a lot of news about the national citizen movement to occupy Wall Street. People from all over the country are expressing their frustrations with the economic decisions of the U.S. and strength of major banks by organizing protests, setting up tents and spending nights outside of banks and political institutions. The goal is to grab the attention of those in office (and those outside of office) to push them to take action on both bridging the gap between the rich and poor and capping the political strength of major economic players that seem to have a pretty tight control over the U.S. economy through lobbying and otherwise.

This occupying movement has been presented as an issue of class - i.e., the lower and middle class vs. the rich. I think it's this focus on economic status rather than other more segmented issues, such as race, age or gender, that has permitted such a unified front. A front that to me is pretty damn refreshing to watch. Yea occupiers may not have a clear list of their demands, but they are doing something they believe in and making sure their voices are heard globally, which is much more than what others are willing to do. And perhaps there will be some sort of resolution that will have a benificial impact on urban communities--communities that I am particularly concerned with--that, on other occasions, find themselves protesting alone.

I used to work on Wall Street during my summers in college, interning at Goldman Sachs -- one of the main culprits under attack by the Wall Street occupiers. Bankers were making tons of money when I was there. As a young, wanna be banker at the time, I was blown away by how much money was circulating throughout that firm. Terms like "derivatives," "fixed income" and "structured securities" had me baffled and wanting to learn more about this grand investment banking industry. I eventually lost interest over time. Let's just say the environment just wasn't for me. Didn't click with my spirit so I moved on. I wonder how excited I would have been to work at Goldman if I was in undergrad today. I could see myself leaving my cubicle and walking through tents of passionate occupiers and just feeling uncomfortable. What if I supported the occupiers? Would my chances of being hired for a full time position quickly diminish if I spent my nights with the occupiers? I wonder how current interns, bankers, secretaries and other employees of these major banks feel and also what these banks are doing to try to maintain positive employee morale. I also wonder if these banks' names have been so politically tarnished that your finance-driven Wharton or Harvard Business School graduate students are having second thoughts on whether they want to spend the rest of their lives making these banks richer. I guess only time will tell. Hopefully someone will do a study on this and give us some insightful feedback.

Throwback Thursdays

Growth. It's a simple term that's packed with a lot of meaning. I can't even begin to tell you how much I've grown from my teenage years to now. Shit. It bugs me out when I think about what I used to be on. I was listening to some of my old songs the other day when it hit me that I should release them. Now some of these songs are really old, but they have a way of capturing a snapshot of my life. So rather than hold onto them all, I've decided to share them with you. Therefore, in the near future, every Thursday (for at least 4 weeks straight) I will release (for free) one of my throwback songs accompanied with a throwback picture. These are tracks and pictures that only a handful of people have ever heard/seen so I'll be releasing them to the public for the VERY FIRST time.

I was pretty young when I was creating these songs. I can hear my growth, both in the tone of my voice and in my content. Certain things I said back that I wouldn't even consider saying right now. But it's nice to view your past to get an understanding of where you are now. And I'd like to share that journey with you.

I've notice that us artists that blog are mainly concerned with the public being aware of our personal, artistic updates. This interview. That new single. Those new videos. Now of course those updates are important, but I'd like to do a bit more in between if you all don't mind.

There are so many topics out there to discuss, including business, economics, politics, relationship, health, etc. I'd like to start diving a bit more deeply into these areas as I blog. My goal with music is not simply to get a bunch of listeners to like me, by any means, so I can "make it," but for me to communicate themes to my listeners to help them focus on what is important and live lives that have meaning to them. So I'm going to continue to push that goal as I blog and share with you all my experiences and discoveries. Hopefully I can help you, and you can help me, in figuring out what this whole life shit is about and determine how we, and those who come after us, should be looking at it.

Music Really Does It For Me

I've been working on so many different things right now. Between the restaurants and other media-related endeavors, my mind has been moving in all sorts of directions. Hadn't been in the studio recording in a few weeks until last Tuesday when I hit Ish Productions Studio. I had recently wrote to a new beat produced by Frank G and wanted to lay down the hook and first verse. I felt so in my element that it hit me again just how much I'm moved by creating music. There really is no other feeling similar to the feeling I get when I throw them headphones on and start unleashing some patterned thoughts that come from a real important place.

So many artists are pressed to blow. Pressed to be on the cover of magazines. Pressed to have people scream their names. I hear that, but for me, just having the ability to create something musically that I believe in is satisfying enough. Naturally, like many other artists, I'd love for the entire world to hear what your man TALoNTED is bringing. But if not, I'll still take the pleasure of basking in my local buzz and bringing life to others, whether one hundred or one million.

In my experience as an entrepeneur with employees, I must say sometimes I have to learn things the hard way. I tend to be forward thinking, trying to cover all bases for the present and future. But there are always under or over calculations made. Your business may be losing money and you think you know why, but you have no idea. Well I can tell you that a big reason why some businesses fail is due to their management (or mismanagement) of employees.

Now I hate to be micro managed. If I were working, I would not like to have a gig where my supervisor was standing over my shoulder all day every day. I'd like a bit of freedom. I therefore try to create the same set up for anyone that works for any of my companies. But just because you try to set up such free environment for your staff doesn't mean you should be lax. You still need to learn to micro manage from the back end and stay heavily on top of what is going on at your business. You'd be surprise what you discover when you are trying to cross the T's and dot the I's of every transaction, every meeting, every issue! Sometimes things just don't add up. Even worse, it may end up being clear that someones is stealing from you--that same someone that gives you a warm smile everyday when you see him/her. And that will mess your head up for real. Trust me. I've been there.

Many employees cut corners where they can. Shit, I've been an employee myself so I can relate to the urge to get over, especially if you're almost certain no one will find out (well at least no one that will make you suffer any consequences). But business owners have the responsibility to put certain systems in place to help ensure that business is run accordingly and that employees follow certain standards. Otherwise, they may find their business going in a direction that they never anticipated and don't understand.

Get on point and don't slack a minute.

Technology is wild right now. The things you can do with your computer and your phone have gotten to the point where you almost don't really need to think to get a lot of shit done. With that said, so many of us want to know how to reach more people through the internet - artists, especially. "How do I get more 'likes' on FB?" "How can I increase my email list serve?" "How can I get more views on YouTube?"

For me, it has always been by engaging the people in-person. I'm far from having a big name in this music biz or so many YouTube views that those who are pressed to blow would be heavily impressed, but I can say that most of my success thus far has come from being out on the ground level reaching out to my fans. I don't even like to call them fans - more so my fellow believers. Yea I can post something on FB and get a decent number of views, but anytime you really want to reach out to someone, nothing compares to do doing it in person. Nothing.

Up and coming artists must be very strategic with their money -- for real. The aim is to provide quality products to your listeners/viewers yet not dig yourself in a hole too much in doing so, especially if the profitability of those products is uncertain. It's crucial to have a balance. I practice balancing shit nearly every day. Gotta keep cash flow sliding in from a couple angels. I know we all wish we can just do us in every sense of the word and not even think about how to survive. But that's not life. That's never been life. It (i.e., life) may be more complicated now, but hey that's the cards we were dealt with. Make your hand the best hand you can hold onto.

Rest in peace to one of the most influential professors I had the pleasure of being taught by. I took professor Derrick Bell's Constitutional law course. I had the pleasure of performing at his class 2 times. Yea, as a lover of music he was the type of man to have his students actually performa at the end of his class. The only law professor I've heard of to do that. He was such an endearing man who didn't hide from forcing his students to discuss tough issues. His frankness was refreshing. The way he ran his course forced us to get tough, stand up in front of many of our peers and speak our minds. I loved him for that.

Talentoso

My Latinos call me "Talentoso" (which means "talented" in Spanish). Everytime I perform a verse or hook in Spanish people ask me, "Are you Dominican?" Funny. Nah, I'm not Dominican. I just got crazy love for the Spanish language and had the opportunity of learning a lot of the language when I studied abroad in Argentina and worked in Mexico.

It's incredible how many languages an individual can actully learn. Paul Robeson spoke over 20 languages and that was back in the sixties before all these language DVDs and apps even existed. As universal as this world is getting you'd be selling yourself short not trying to pick up another language. Simply from a relating perspective, learning just a bit of another language will have you enjoy another culture in ways you just couldn't otherwise. Just my take on things.

Fresh from D.C.

The two ladies above are Queen Bleu Nile (left) and Euphrates (right) who accompanied me on stage with their beautiful voices at The HeART Gallery - D.C. I'm glad we decided to do the show, even though it was last minute move. There were some logistical issues that we had to pound through and we did gracefully. That was my first performance in D.C. ever and I have a feeling it is far from my last. The energy out there was love and connecting with new D.C. fans was priceless.

My favorite aspect of this whole music thing is performing. Nothing competes with that moment of sharing your artistry live, particularly when I am properly provided with an excellent sound system, professional lighting and time for rehearsals. Give me those and I'll show you something incredible - no question. I can't wait till the day that I have access to all I need to present the true Talonted Experience.

Prepping for D.C.

So I'm headed to D.C. bright and early tomorrow morning for my performance at The HeART Gallery event. Prepping the clothes and handling key business items right now so that I'll be good out there for the weekend with everything at home covered. I'm linking up with the house band for the event tomorrow afternoon for the first time. I'm hoping we have a decent amount of time slotted to get things in order cause I'm type particular with how I like things. But hey, we'll do what we can and give all attendees a damn good show regardless, baby.

It's wild how last minute this performance was put together. But everything seemed to fall into place. I'm looking forward to performing in D.C. for the first time. I've always been told the vibe out there is love. I've been for one short visit and definitely enjoyed the energy. But performing will give me the chance of absorbing a new kind of energy.

We just confirmed this last night. The decision to have them open was pushed heavily by Talonted, who really wanted Bleu and Euphrates to get a moment to do their own thing that night.

Have "that" Conversation Early

When you're going for something you're going to be dealing with people that impact your movement. No matter how hard you try, and to keep it real I have, you just can't do it all alone, and so building a team is essential. But one thing many of us forget to do is have "that" conversation with those we work with before things get out of hand.

So what's "that" conversation? It's the conversation that addresses who gets what when the company starts bringing in profits. It's the conversation that details what happens when one person on the team stops holding up his end of the bargain, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and what the consequences are for doing so. It's the conversation that details who gets the final say when parties disagree.

Basically, that conversation is a contract, whether verbal or written, that too many of us forget to enter into when we are working others. Then, there's an issue and you start to address it then, rather than already having the tools to address it. It's hard for parties to agree on how each should be treated when they're beefing. Have you tried it before? Yea? Well then you already know. Not saying it can't be done amicably, but chances are you aren't trying to budge on much when you have a problem with the other person. It's just human nature.

And don't think this applies only to business matters. You should take this same approach in relationships. If you're not looking for someone to wife up or husband up and you're just trying to have fun then, shit, state that and act like that. I'm not even gonna lie and act like making this known upfront completely solves the problem all the time, but it does help. Or even if you are currently in a long term relationship, the discussion of wanting or not wanting kids, where to settle down, how much family income will be needed for both parties to live the lives they want to, should all be addressed well before that engagement ring comes.

So before things get really real, have "that" conversation, so that if something goes down, for better or worse, y'all know, or are at least in a better position to know, exactly how things will be handled.

"T2" Already in the Making

So as you know, or at least should know by looking at the banner at the top of this page, I'll be releasing my album "T"on September 16th. Really looking forward to sharing what I have been creating over the past year with you. But the creative process doesn't stop just because you're dropping an album. I'm already conceptualizing "T II."

Last night at Ish Productions Studios, I laid down a 16 for a song that I may be collaborating on with a well-known R&B artist from DC. Can you guess who? If you've played my tweets closely you probably can. I hate to give too much detail in the instance things don't play out as planned, which always happens in this music business (or shit, in business generally). But as details get confirmed in ways I need them to, I'll let you know for sure.

The Ish Production

Steady Business = Comfortable w/ Change

It was Sunday at 8:45AM. I was sleeping on the couch after going to bed at 4:30AM from putting in work at Ish Productions Studios. My cell rings. Now those who know me personally know I tend not to talk on my cell phone. (Details on that later.) Who's calling? Well, I didn't exactly know what person was calling but the caller ID read "HLS Maplewood," which is the the Maplewood location for one of my and my brother's restaurants. One of my only-Spanish-speaking employees called to tell me frantically, "Agua está en todos lados!" (i.e., "Water is all over the place!"). I hauled ass to the restaurant and we did what we had to in order to open at our scheduled time of 10AM. No customer that day noticed any water issues.

Steady business requires change. When reading the title, you might have thought I meant being comfortable with technological advance or something broadly similar. Well I do, but I really want to pull your focus more so in the day-to-day flexibility you have to get comfortable with in order for your business to be steady - not for you, but for your customers.

Anything can happen at any moment. Sometimes I contemplate my brother and I closing the restaurants at least 1 day a week just so that we can have a designated stress free day; or rather, a designated less stress day. Because any day we are open I'm well aware that anything is liable to happen. We've dealt with all types of phone calls or text messages from our employees, including: "It's 10AM and I can't get into the restaurant.", "There is no soy chicken left!", "There is no change for customers.", "[X employee] didn't show up to work and I have to leave!", "Yo there's a fire in here!" just to name a few. Oh and it gets even uglier than that, trust. I may have to deal with these issues if I'm in the middle of a recording session, in the middle of an important meeting that I have been planning for weeks - literally anywhere.

This unpredictability is not solely applicable to the restaurant field. It also applies to many other areas of business. Let's take law for example. Your client may call you early in the morning to tell you, "Listen - the deal needs to get done today!" when you had been planing on closing it next week in order to close a deal for another client that day. What do you do? You close both deals in a day. How? Shit, who the hell knows how! All you know is that you have to. And why do you have to? Because you have to take care of your customers; and if you don't, they will find someone else who will.

Of course you can take some steps to avoid such unexpected stress. You can hire someone to be a buffer between you and the stress. That definitely helps. But you'll need the resources for that. Alternatively, you can spend every hour at your business. That helps too, but it can be exhausting and definitely gets complicated if you are blessed to have more than one location. The reality is, regardless of what stage you are with your business or how many resources you have to allocate to your business, you will inevitably face unexpected changes.

Change isn't dating your business. It has already put a ring on her and made a couple of annoying-ass babies with her! They're glued together forever unless, God-forbid, the business dies. So if change is in a relationship that deep with your business, you really don't have a choice but to get comfortable with it.

Owning Your Own Business Can Mean LESS Freedom

We glamorize owning our own business all the time, don't we? How many times have you heard someone say, "I'm tired of my job. I wish I could do my own thing! That would be amazing!" Frequently. Especially for those who go through school, graduate, finally enter that "it" gig and are let down when they realize "it" just isn't it.

So many of us think that once we pursue our own thing our lives will automatically be much more rewarding. You fantasize about walking into your business operation and seeing happy customers being served, receiving accolades from your peers and kindly directing staff on what to do as they enthusiastically listen. Well...let me be the one to stress - this business shit is never that sweet.

From what I gauge talking to so many people unsatisfied with life is that many of us pursue entrepreneurship in order to have more freedom. Freedom of expression, freedom of managing your time and freedom of overall control of your life. But the reality is, having your own business can result in significantly less freedom than a job if you don't structure it appropriately. Below are a few ideas I picked during my time at Wharton and over the years as an entrepreneur that may help prevent you from falling into this trap.

1. Create a business that can function without you. Don't go from being a shoe salesmen to owning your own shoe boutique and now being the shoe salesman, cashier, maintenance person and accountant. You just left 1 job to give yourself 4? Nah - that's not the move. At least that's not how you should plan on the operation functioning when it's established. In the early stages of a business you have to be around and wear multiple hats. But if you don't start working towards a business structure that will allow you to take sick and vacation days when you need them, you can find yourself overcommitted to the point where if you aren't there your business simply can't function.

2. Avoid the "It's so much better when the owner is there" experience. Sometimes we have all the proper staff in place, but then make ourselves the center of attention. If you plan on being at your operation everyday all day then hey who cares. But if you are attempting to create a business that can give you more freedom to do engage in other endeavors then you better train your staff to set the tone for your clients' experience. If you always make a bigger sandwich for customer Eddie, tell the funniest jokes to customer Tasha and give half off products to customer Stacey because you think she's cute, then Eddie, Tasha and Stacey may find themselves a bit upset if they arrive at your operation and you're not there.

3. Set hours that make sense for your lifestyle. When starting a brand new business, we tend to let clients set our hours for us, particularly if you are in the services field, such as business consulting or legal work. Don't. Well, at least plan on building a schedule that will ultimately suit the lifestyle that you want to have. I get it. You want your own business. But do you also want less sleep? Do you want your kids or other loved ones to never see you? Nah, you don't want that. It's OK to be closed 1 day out of the week or to tell clients that you are generally offline after 7PM. If you offer quality service enough clients will respect your schedule to keep you in business.

4. Do what you believe in and make it worth buying, not just what sells. You can be an entrepreneur and be in a cage. One of the easiest ways to do that is by focusing solely on your profit and giving the middle finger to everything else. A young artist who decides to create her own label will inevitably find it tough to get her songs on commercial radio. The moment she starts conforming herself to be more "radio friendly" is the moment that she starts to build her cage. If she blows up based on her more radio friendly style of music, she'll feel enormous pressure to continue being someone that she really isn't to keep her profits steady. How crazy is that? A person becoming an artist--a profession that stands for freedom of expression--living in a cage that she created. That's foolish. Stick to who you are and what you want to bring and work that into a sellable product.

I could have got some of you all wrong. Perhaps you want to be at your business all day everyday and want to be the center of attention with your customers. If so, then scratch all of the above. But if you are the businessman or businesswoman who wants to build a business that still allows you to have a decent quality of life and be true to yourself, then I recommend you consider all 4 of the principles above.

Give Celebrities a Break

As an aspiring artist, businessman/woman, or whatever else your desires are pushing you to be, nothing is more inspiring than watching and learning from another who has achieved exactly what you want to achieve. Yea, you may have your own take on things, but watching what others have done (and/or are doing) can really keep you in the zone to obtain your life goals. But damn. Sometimes you just have to give that celebrity you're watching a break.

When I say "break" I don't mean stop judging that celebrity's actions or inactions (though I do agree that many of us need to give celebrities a break in that sense as well). Rather, I mean try to take more moments at increasing your chances of achieving your goals instead of simply watching him/her have fun in theirs.

Don't get me wrong at all for one bit. Getting inspirationally caught up in another's movement is healthy. But I can't tell you how many times I have seen aspiring actors, artists, etc. be so damn focused on what their favorite celebrities are doing that they lose valuable time improving their chances of achieving their own celebrity status.

Actually if you think about it, this doesn't just apply to watching celebrities. This applies to watching anyone that garners your attention in a way that either inspires you or makes you feel less adequate. That chick that has all the boys in your class overlooking you. That teammate that has all the fans overlooking you. That student that has all the teachers overlooking you. The examples are endless. And if you spend too much time focusing on how insignificant you are compared to that other person or, less cynically, focusing on how impressive that person is, such time spending can lead to your detriment in ways you didn't anticipate.

Get inspired. Stay inspired. But don't forget to inspire.

Making the Band

So, we have been putting together the band to back me up on stage for "The Talonted Experience" event. Given the size of the venue we're going to keep the band fairly small -- a drummer, keyboardist and bass guitarist. With the exception of the keyboardist these are the same cats I performed with at the Bilal Oliver show back in February. Looking forward to performing with them for a second time.

We are scheduled for our first rehearsal this Wednesday. I'll let y'all know how that goes. I'm sure well. I need to figure out the transitions between tracks, put together some performance tracks and a few other things before we rehearse. No time for BSing. Shit...is there ever time for BSing?

Artists: Know Your Business

Artists, be sure you are constantly stepping your game up when it comes to understanding the business behind the art you create. And when I say artists, I'm not only referring to music artists. I'm talking to ALL artists, whether you are a clothing designer, graphics designer or interior decorator. Know your damn business.

I can't tell you how many times I've sat down with artists who are so focused on their art that they forget just how crucial the business side of things go. Even if you hire someone to handle the business for you doesn't mean that you should be walking around clueless as to how the business works. You will regret it. Staying sharp on all aspects of what you do keeps you from being taken advantage of and also can help you strategize on how to improve your business model.

Just a little advice from a hardworking artist.

The Coffee Cave: Tentative Location for "T" Album Release

So the Flo Global team and I have been looking around at a few locations to decide where to have the "T" album release event which will be called, "The Talonted Experience." We hit NY and thought The Shrine in Harlem would be a nice fit, but the available dates aren't working for us. Plus with Jersey as my home, I'm thinking this important event should be there, feel me?

Newark's The Coffee Cave on Halsey Street just might be the perfect place. With it's bi-level loft set up and a stage/dance floor in the back, it's hard for other venues to compete. Plus I spent my baby years growing up in Newark, so I'll always have an affinity for that city.

I"ll be sure for the Flo Global team to keep y'all posted.

"T" Album Update

I spent over 20 hours just getting the artwork right for "T" - which is scheduled to drop next month. Every little detail is being fine-tuned. I just listened to the mastered version from start to finish and I must say I'm really happy with how each track came out. We took our time on this one. My good friend and engineer Frank is going to take a close listen tomorrow to ensure there aren't any more kinks we need to work out. Then it's a go, baby!

Flo Global will be releasing the album digitally via iTunes, Rhapsody and all them other sites, as well as have physical copies available for purchase through Amazon.

I'm gassed right now, y'all! For real. I'm working with a few folks to put together an album release show/party shortly soon. Of course we'll have some good drinks, a good vibe and some official guest performances.

Fresh from ATL

Just touched down from 5 days in Atlanta. A productive trip indeed. Made quite a few important connections, some of which I didn't even plan on making. The pic above is me posted at one of Atlanta's biggest car shows. Akon, Jeezy and a couple of other artists performed that day.

The way things go down in ATL is a bit different from how they go down up top (i.e., NJ/NY area). I could feel the cultural difference as soon as I landed. You always learn something new when you travel. I'm sure it's going to give me a new perspective on my music.
